History
Powerful Partnerships is a Citizen Advocacy Organisation. We are a
Company Limited by Guarantee and a Registered Charity. We were first
set up in 1995 to support people who were leaving Gogarburn Hospital
in Edinburgh to live in the community. We have developed experience
of working alongside people who have been marginalized by society
and excluded from community facilities. Our funding came to an end
when the hospital closed in September 1999 but Edinburgh Council provided
bridging finance for a period of six months to allow us time to explore
other sources of income. We succeeded in securing a 3-year grant through
the Community Fund and latterly through Lothian Primary Care NHS Trust.
Reality now tells us that people encounter even more difficulties
after leaving the hospital and this situation continues today. We realise that not only people
who moved out of long stay hospitals required advocates, but also
many people who have lived in communities all of their lives.
During 2003 we received a second grant from the Community Fund (now Big Lottery) along with grants from NHS Lothian and Edinburgh Council Social Work Department and Lloyds TSB.
This was great news because not only could the work of the organisation continue into the future but we could embark on new areas. We started to offer citizen advocacy to people living in the North West of Edinburgh and short term advocacy to people right across Edinburgh. During 2004 we received funding from the Thistle Foundation, Edinburgh and Lloyds TSB which has increased our work to support people by way of citizen advocacy and short term advocacy right across Edinburgh.
